Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CDL-A Theory ELDT cover?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT covers the federal ELDT curriculum: vehicle inspection and safety, basic control, shifting and operation, air brake operation and inspection, hazardous materials awareness, and safe driving practices. This is the online theory portion only. Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training is required separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider.
How long does the course take?+
The CDL-A Theory ELDT course completes in under 2 hours. You can finish whenever it fits your schedule—no live instructors, no set class times. Once you submit, your completion is auto-reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
How much does CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT is $20. If you also need CDL-B theory and DMV permit-test prep, the CDL Complete Bundle is $45 (saves $10 vs. buying all three separately at $55 total). DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option available.
Is this FMCSA-approved and will it be submitted to TX DPS?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. Your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours. TX DPS verifies ELDT by checking the TPR—you don't need to submit it yourself. You'll have proof of completion in your email immediately.
Who needs CDL-A ELDT in Texas?+
If you're getting your first CDL-A on or after February 7, 2022, you must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT before the skills test. Drivers who obtained their CDL-A before February 7, 2022, are grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT. However, if a grandfathered driver upgrades from CDL-B to CDL-A, they still need CDL-A ELDT.
