Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CDL-A Theory ELDT cover?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT covers the federal knowledge foundation for Class A trucks: vehicle inspection, safe operation, cargo handling, and hazardous material awareness. It does NOT include air brakes, general knowledge, or combination vehicle questions — those are DMV knowledge-test topics. If you need DMV permit-test prep, our CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) covers 119 practice questions on those topics. BTW (behind-the-wheel training) is required separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider — DLA Academy does not provide BTW.
How much does CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
$20. DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option. If you're also getting your Class B CDL or need DMV permit prep, check the CDL Complete Bundle — $45 for CDL-A Theory ELDT + CDL-B Theory ELDT + CDL-A Permit Prep (119 DMV practice questions). That bundle saves $10 vs. buying each separately ($20 + $20 + $15 = $55 individual).
How long does the course take?+
Under 2 hours. Most students finish in 1.5 hours. You can pause and resume anytime — no time limit. Once you complete it, your certificate is auto-submitted to FMCSA within 24 hours, and NM MVD can verify your completion through the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
Do I need CDL-A Theory ELDT if my CDL was issued before February 7, 2022?+
If you already hold a CDL-A issued before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and do not need retroactive ELDT. However, if you are upgrading your license class (e.g., from CDL-B to CDL-A) or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus), you will need ELDT for the upgrade or endorsement. Contact the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD) to confirm your specific situation.
What happens after I complete the course?+
Your completion certificate is automatically submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD) verifies your ELDT completion by querying the registry when you apply for your CDL skills test. You do not need to manually upload or mail the certificate — the federal system handles it. You can then schedule your Class A CDL skills test (written and driving) with NM MVD. BTW must be completed separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider before or after your DLA course.
