Getting a CDL in New Mexico means working with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD). Since February 7, 2022, anyone pursuing a new CDL or a new endorsement must complete FMCSA-approved Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry — your completion is auto-submitted to the registry within 24 hours, and the NM MVD verifies it when you apply.

New Mexico CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in New Mexico you'll work through New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, New Mexico uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between ELDT and the DMV permit test?+
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is federally-mandated theory training delivered online by FMCSA-approved providers like DLA Academy. The DMV permit test (CLP knowledge test) is a separate exam administered by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. Our CDL-A Theory ELDT ($20) and CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) cover different material and serve different purposes. You need both.
Do I need ELDT if I got my CDL before February 2022?+
If you already hold a CDL issued before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered in — you do not need ELDT for the license class you already have. However, if you want to upgrade to a higher class (e.g., CDL-B to CDL-A) or add a new endorsement (H, P, or S), you will need ELDT for that upgrade or endorsement.
How long does an ELDT course take?+
Each individual ELDT course (CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory, Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus) completes in under 2 hours. You set your own pace — you can finish in one sitting or spread it across multiple sessions.
What happens after I complete ELDT with DLA Academy?+
DLA Academy auto-submits your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division verifies your ELDT completion by querying that registry when you apply for your CDL or endorsement. No additional paperwork is required from you.
How much does ELDT cost, and what's not included?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each; CDL-A Permit Prep is $15; bundles range $30–$50. These prices cover the online training only. DLA Academy does NOT provide behind-the-wheel (BTW) training — you schedule that separately with a local FMCSA-registered provider. TSA Hazmat fingerprinting (for the H endorsement) is also arranged separately through IDEMIA Universal Enroll.
