Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hazmat ELDT and do I need it?+
Hazmat ELDT is the mandatory entry-level training required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) before you can take the Hazmat knowledge test at the NM MVD. You need it to qualify for the H endorsement, which is required to transport hazardous materials. The only exemption is if you already had a CDL with a Hazmat endorsement before February 7, 2022—those licenses are grandfathered. Upgrades and new endorsements still require ELDT.
How much does Hazmat ELDT cost?+
Hazmat ELDT is $20. That's the lowest price for FMCSA-approved Hazmat training—most other providers charge $23 to $75. If you also want DMV practice questions for the Hazmat knowledge test, we offer the Hazmat ELDT + DMV Test Prep Bundle for $30, which saves you $5.
How long does it take to complete?+
Hazmat ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You can finish it at your own pace, whenever it's convenient. Once you're done, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
Is DLA Academy FMCSA-approved?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. When you complete any of our ELDT courses, your completion is automatically submitted to the TPR within 24 hours. The NM MVD will be able to verify it right away.
What do I do after Hazmat ELDT—how do I get my H endorsement?+
After completing Hazmat ELDT with DLA Academy, you'll have proof of completion. Take that to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD) office, apply for the H endorsement on your CDL, and take the Hazmat knowledge test. The test covers hazmat regulations, placard recognition, and emergency procedures. Our Hazmat ELDT covers all the required knowledge topics. (Note: TSA Hazmat fingerprinting is handled through standard IDEMIA enrollment—confirm the current process with the NM MVD.)
