Michigan CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Michigan you'll work through Michigan Department of State (Michigan SOS). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Michigan uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between ELDT and the permit test?+
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is federally mandated online theory required before your CDL skills test. The permit test (CLP knowledge test) is Michigan SOS's separate written exam covering general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles. You take the permit test at a Michigan SOS office after obtaining your Commercial Learner's Permit. CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) is a study tool for that permit test — it is NOT FMCSA-approved ELDT and does not replace CDL-A Theory ELDT ($20).
Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL from before February 7, 2022?+
If your CDL was issued before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT. However, if you're upgrading your license class (e.g., from CDL-B to CDL-A) or adding a new endorsement (H, P, or S), you MUST complete the relevant ELDT course first. Check with Michigan SOS if you're unsure about your license date.
How long does an ELDT course take?+
Each individual ELDT course completes in under 2 hours. CDL-A Permit Prep (the DMV study tool) is self-paced — you can work through the 119 questions at your own speed.
Is DLA Academy approved by Michigan SOS?+
DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. When you complete any ELDT course, we auto-submit your completion to FMCSA within 24 hours. Michigan SOS verifies your ELDT by querying the FMCSA registry — they don't receive a direct submission from us, but they can confirm your training immediately after our submission.
What happens after I finish my ELDT?+
After completing your ELDT course, you're ready to schedule your CDL skills test with Michigan SOS. If you're pursuing a Hazmat endorsement, you'll also need to complete TSA fingerprinting through IDEMIA Universal Enroll — that's a separate process. Behind-the-wheel training (for Class A or B) must be completed at a local FMCSA-registered provider. DLA Academy covers online theory only.
