Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does DLA Academy's CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT is $20. That's the lowest price for an FMCSA-approved course. If you also need the CDL-B Theory course and the 119-question CDL-A Permit Prep study tool, the CDL Complete Bundle is $45 (saves $10 vs. buying all three separately). Most competitors charge $25–$60 for a single ELDT course.
How long does the CDL-A Theory ELDT take to complete?+
Under 2 hours. You can finish it in one sitting or break it into chunks across a few days — whatever works for your schedule. After you complete it, DLA Academy auto-submits your certificate to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
Do I need anything else besides this ELDT course?+
Yes. The CDL-A Theory ELDT covers federal training requirements, but you also need to study for the Michigan SOS CDL-A knowledge test (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles). Our CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) includes 119 DMV practice questions to help you pass that test. After you pass the knowledge test and get your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), you'll need to complete behind-the-wheel training at a local FMCSA-registered provider — DLA Academy covers theory only.
Is DLA Academy's ELDT FMCSA-approved and accepted in Michigan?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. Your completion certificate auto-submits to TPR within 24 hours. Michigan SOS verifies ELDT completion by checking TPR — you don't submit it yourself. DLA is accepted in 49 states, including Michigan. (Washington is the only state we don't serve.)
Who needs this ELDT course?+
Anyone applying for a new Class A CDL in Michigan after February 7, 2022 must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT. If you already hold a CDL issued before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need to retake ELDT for that class. But if you're upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you'll need ELDT for the upgrade or endorsement, even if your original license is grandfathered.
