Getting your Class A CDL in West Virginia means you'll work through the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (WV DMV). Federal law now requires FMCSA-approved ELDT before you take the skills test — that's what DLA Academy delivers. We cover the theory you need; the behind-the-wheel training and skills test happen separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider.

West Virginia CDL A Theory ELDT — Step by Step

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What's included in the CDL-A Theory ELDT?+
The CDL-A Theory ELDT covers the federal ELDT curriculum required by the FMCSA — vehicle operation, safety, regulations, and hazard perception. It does NOT include behind-the-wheel training (BTW) or the DMV skills test. You'll complete the theory course, then arrange BTW separately with a local provider, then take your Class A CDL skills test through the WV DMV.
How long does the course take?+
The CDL-A Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. It's self-paced — you can finish it in one sitting or split it across a couple of days.
How much does CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT is $20. If you're also planning to get your CDL-B or want to prep for the CDL permit test, check out the CDL Complete Bundle — it includes CDL-A ELDT, CDL-B ELDT, and CDL-A Permit Prep for $45 total (saves $10 vs. buying each separately).
Does DLA Academy auto-submit my completion to the WV DMV?+
We auto-submit your ELDT completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The WV DMV verifies your ELDT by checking the TPR — you don't need to manually send anything to the WV DMV. Your record is live and searchable once we submit.
Who needs to take CDL-A ELDT?+
If you got your CDL-A before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT. But if you're getting a new CDL-A, upgrading from CDL-B to CDL-A, or adding a new endorsement (H, P, or S) to any CDL, you need FMCSA-approved ELDT. There are no exemptions for West Virginia drivers.
