Getting a Class A CDL in Utah means working through the Utah Driver License Division (Utah DLD). Federal law requires FMCSA-approved ELDT before you can take the skills test — that's where DLA Academy comes in. Our online CDL-A Theory course covers everything the Utah DLD expects: vehicle systems, cargo handling, safety protocols, and road dynamics. Complete it in under 2 hours, and we auto-submit your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CDL-A Theory ELDT cover?+
Our course covers the theory required before your Class A skills test: vehicle inspection and operation, load securement, hazardous materials awareness, brake systems, coupling and uncoupling, and defensive driving. It does not include behind-the-wheel (BTW) training — you'll need to schedule that separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider once you pass the Utah DLD's knowledge test and have your Commercial Learner's Permit.
How long does the course take?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You can finish in one sitting or break it into chunks — the course saves your progress. Once complete, we submit your certificate to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
How much does CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
The course is $20. If you also need the CDL-A Permit Prep (119 DMV practice questions for the CLP knowledge test), we offer the CDL Complete Bundle for $45 — that includes CDL-A Theory ELDT, CDL-B Theory ELDT, and CDL-A Permit Prep. Buying all three separately would cost $55, so the bundle saves you $10. DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option.
Do I need ELDT to get a Class A CDL in Utah?+
Yes — unless your Class A CDL was issued before February 7, 2022. If it was, you're grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT. However, if you're upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you still need ELDT regardless of when your original license was issued. Check with the Utah DLD if you're unsure.
Is DLA Academy approved by FMCSA and accepted in Utah?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. Our CDL-A Theory ELDT is accepted in Utah and 48 other states (Washington is excluded). When you complete the course, we auto-submit your certificate to FMCSA within 24 hours. The Utah DLD verifies ELDT by checking the FMCSA Training Provider Registry — you don't submit directly to them.
