Texas CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Texas you'll work through Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Texas uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does ELDT cost?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each. CDL-A Permit Prep is $15. Bundles range $30–$50 and represent genuine discounts: the CDL Complete Bundle ($45) saves $10 vs. buying CDL-A ELDT, CDL-B ELDT, and Permit Prep separately ($55 total). The 3-Endorsement Bundle ($50) saves $10 vs. $60. The Hazmat + Permit Prep Bundle ($30) saves $5 vs. $35. DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option available.
How long does ELDT take to complete?+
Each ELDT course completes in under 2 hours. You can finish on your own schedule, any time, any device.
What are the ELDT requirements in Texas?+
Anyone obtaining a new CDL or upgrading to a higher class after February 7, 2022, must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT. TX DPS will verify your completion through the federal Training Provider Registry within 24 hours of you finishing the course. If your CDL was issued before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered — no ELDT required for that license. However, if you add a new endorsement (H, P, S) or upgrade your license class, ELDT is still required for that new credential.
Is DLA Academy FMCSA-approved?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. When you complete any of our ELDT courses, your completion is automatically submitted to the TPR within 24 hours. TX DPS queries the TPR to verify you've met the ELDT requirement.
What about Hazmat TSA fingerprinting in Texas?+
After you complete Hazmat ELDT with DLA Academy, you'll enroll in TSA background checks through IDEMIA Universal Enroll. IDEMIA handles biometric fingerprinting for all states except Florida. Schedule your appointment at an IDEMIA center in or near your area. TSA fees are separate from the ELDT course cost.
