Iowa DOT MVD requires FMCSA-approved ELDT before you sit for the Class B skills test. Once you finish with DLA Academy, your completion is auto-submitted to FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. Iowa DOT MVD then verifies your ELDT status through that registry when you apply for your skills test. If you already hold a CDL issued before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered — you don't need ELDT to keep that license. However, if you're upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you'll need ELDT for that upgrade or endorsement, even if your original CDL is grandfathered.
