To get a CDL in Mississippi, you'll work through the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MS DPS). The federal FMCSA ELDT mandate took effect February 7, 2022, and it applies in Mississippi — meaning anyone getting a CDL for the first time, upgrading from a non-commercial license, or adding a new endorsement must complete approved ELDT training. Here's what the process looks like.

Mississippi CDL Requirements — The Complete Picture

To get a Commercial Driver's License in Mississippi, you work through Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MS DPS). The federal FMCSA ELDT mandate (effective February 7, 2022) applies in every state including Mississippi — any new CDL applicant, class upgrade, or endorsement addition requires you to complete FMCSA-approved ELDT before sitting for the CDL skills test.

The complete sequence for a first-time CDL applicant in Mississippi:

Hazmat endorsement applicants additionally need TSA threat-assessment fingerprinting through IDEMIA Universal Enroll (standard process — typical wait time 30–45 days for clearance).

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Training — Required, But Not From Us

For CDL-A and CDL-B applicants, federal ELDT requirements have two parts: theory (what DLA Academy provides) and behind-the-wheel training (BTW). BTW must be completed at a local FMCSA-registered BTW provider — typically a trucking school, a CDL training facility, or an employer-sponsored program. DLA Academy does not offer BTW.

BTW for CDL-A and CDL-B typically takes 40–160+ hours depending on the program, costs $3,000–$10,000+ depending on the provider, and must be done at an FMCSA-registered facility (the FMCSA TPR has a directory) — many are located in Mississippi metro areas.

For Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus endorsements: no BTW required. Those endorsements are theory-only on the federal side — though some states require additional in-vehicle testing for School Bus and Passenger at the state level.

TSA Step

TSA Hazmat Fingerprinting

For the Hazmat endorsement, Mississippi requires a TSA threat assessment. Schedule your fingerprinting appointment through IDEMIA (Universal Enroll). Results typically take 30–45 days. Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MS DPS) cannot add the H endorsement to your CDL until TSA clears you.

Pre-February 2022 CDL Holders — Are You Grandfathered?

The FMCSA ELDT mandate took effect February 7, 2022. If your CDL was issued before that date, you are grandfathered for your current license class. You don't have to retroactively complete ELDT to keep driving.

BUT — grandfathering only covers your existing license class. If you're doing any of the following after February 7, 2022, ELDT is required regardless of when your CDL was issued:

Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MS DPS) verifies your ELDT completion through the FMCSA TPR before issuing the new class or endorsement.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Who actually needs ELDT in Mississippi?+
Anyone getting a CDL in Mississippi for the first time must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT. If you got your CDL before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered — you don't need to retake ELDT for the license you hold. But if you upgrade (like going from CDL-A to CDL-B) or add a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you'll need ELDT for that upgrade or endorsement, even if your original license is grandfathered. The MS DPS enforces this rule when you apply.
What's the difference between ELDT and behind-the-wheel training?+
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is the federally-mandated classroom and online training covering theory. DLA Academy provides the FMCSA-approved ELDT portion — you can complete it in under 2 hours. Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training is the hands-on driving test preparation you do with a local FMCSA-registered provider in Mississippi. You need both: ELDT first, then BTW before you take the MS DPS skills test. DLA Academy covers theory; BTW is a separate step with a local instructor.
How do TSA Hazmat fingerprinting and background checks work in Mississippi?+
If you're adding or renewing the Hazmat endorsement, you'll need a TSA background check. In Mississippi, you enroll through IDEMIA Universal Enroll (the national TSA provider) — not through the MS DPS directly. After you complete Hazmat ELDT with DLA Academy, IDEMIA will contact you with fingerprinting and background-check instructions. Once TSA clears you, the MS DPS issues the H endorsement. The process typically takes a few weeks. Note: TSA fees are separate from ELDT costs.
What happens after I complete ELDT with DLA Academy?+
When you finish any FMCSA-approved ELDT course with DLA Academy, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) within 24 hours. The MS DPS queries the TPR when you apply for your CDL or endorsement, so your training record is instantly available to them. You don't have to manually send anything to Mississippi — the federal system handles it. You'll still need to pass the DMV knowledge test, complete BTW training, and pass the skills test with the MS DPS.
What's the 14-day waiting period after I get my CLP?+
When you pass the MS DPS knowledge test, you receive a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). Federal rules require you to hold the CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test. During that 14 days, you must practice behind-the-wheel with a CDL holder. Once the 14 days are up, you can schedule your skills test with the MS DPS. This waiting period is a federal requirement, not a Mississippi rule — it applies everywhere.
