Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the CDL-B Theory ELDT cover?+
The course covers the theory and regulations required for Class B commercial driving — vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, defensive driving, air brake systems (if your vehicle has them), and safe operating procedures. It does NOT include behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. You'll complete BTW separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider in Hawaii.
How long does the course take?+
CDL-B Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You can start and stop as needed — there's no time limit. Once you finish, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
What's the cost?+
CDL-B Theory ELDT is $20. That's the lowest price you'll find for an FMCSA-approved course. If you're also working toward a CDL-A or need permit prep, the CDL Complete Bundle is $45 and includes CDL-A Theory ELDT ($20), CDL-B Theory ELDT ($20), and CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) — saving you $10 vs. buying separately.
Does DLA Academy provide behind-the-wheel training?+
No. DLA Academy covers the theory only. After you finish the CDL-B Theory ELDT, you must complete BTW training with a local FMCSA-registered provider in Hawaii. Your county Driver Licensing office (Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui, or Kauai) can direct you to approved BTW trainers. HDOT oversees all CDL training statewide.
Who needs ELDT for a Class B CDL?+
Anyone getting a new Class B CDL or upgrading from a Class C (non-commercial) license needs ELDT. If you got your CDL before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need to retake ELDT for that same class. However, if you're upgrading to Class B from Class C, or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you still need ELDT.
