Quick answer: ELDT in Connecticut costs $20 per course at DLA Academy — FMCSA-approved, online, completed in under 2 hours, and auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (CT DMV) verifies completion through the federal TPR before testing. Required only for first-time CDL applicants and endorsement-adds after February 7, 2022.
Getting a CDL in Connecticut means working through the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (CT DMV). Federal law requires FMCSA-approved Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before you can take the skills test for a Class A or Class B license, or before you can add Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus endorsements. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved, listed on the Training Provider Registry, and accepted in Connecticut and 48 other states — all at the lowest price online.

Connecticut CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Connecticut you'll work through Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (CT DMV). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Connecticut uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What ELDT courses does DLA Academy offer for Connecticut drivers?+
We offer five FMCSA-approved ELDT courses: CDL-A Theory ELDT ($20), CDL-B Theory ELDT ($20), Hazmat ELDT ($20), Passenger ELDT ($20), and School Bus ELDT ($20). Each course covers federal ELDT requirements and completes in under 2 hours. We also offer CDL-A Permit Prep ($15), a 119-question DMV practice test for studying before your Commercial Learner's Permit test at the CT DMV — this is not FMCSA ELDT, but a separate study tool. We bundle our courses too: the CDL Complete Bundle ($45) includes CDL-A ELDT, CDL-B ELDT, and Permit Prep; the 3-Endorsement Bundle ($50) includes Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus; and the Hazmat + DMV Test Prep Bundle ($30) pairs Hazmat ELDT with Permit Prep.
How long does it take to complete an ELDT course?+
Any individual ELDT course — CDL-A, CDL-B, Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus — completes in under 2 hours. Most drivers finish in 90 minutes or less. You can start and stop as needed; there are no session time limits. Once you finish, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours, and the CT DMV can verify it there.
Do I need behind-the-wheel (BTW) training after ELDT?+
Yes. ELDT covers the federal theory requirements, but you must complete BTW training separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider before you can take the CT DMV skills test for your Class A or Class B license. DLA Academy does not provide BTW — you'll arrange that with a training school in Connecticut. The ELDT is just the first step.
Who needs ELDT, and who is grandfathered in Connecticut?+
Anyone who received their first CDL on or after February 7, 2022, must have completed FMCSA-approved ELDT before the skills test. If you got your CDL before that date, you are grandfathered and don't need to repeat ELDT for that license class. However, if you are upgrading from Class B to Class A, or adding any new endorsement (H, P, or S) after February 7, 2022, you must complete the relevant ELDT course — grandfathering does not apply to new endorsements or class upgrades.
What about Hazmat TSA fingerprinting in Connecticut?+
If you are adding the Hazmat (H) endorsement, you must complete a TSA background check and fingerprinting through IDEMIA Universal Enroll (idemia.com/enroll). This is separate from the Hazmat ELDT course. You'll set up your IDEMIA appointment on your own schedule, and the CT DMV will verify your TSA clearance when you apply for the endorsement.
