Connecticut CDL-B Theory ELDT — Get Your Class B CDL Online

CDL-B Theory ELDT is the federally mandated online training required to take the Class B CDL skills test at the CT DMV. If you got your commercial license before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered in — no retroactive ELDT required. If you're new to commercial driving or upgrading from a non-commercial to a Class B CDL, ELDT is mandatory. School employees with a grandfathered Class B CDL do not need ELDT for the School Bus (S) endorsement; all others do.

CDL-B Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You set the schedule — start and stop whenever you want. Once you finish, your completion is automatically submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The CT DMV verifies your ELDT through the Registry when you show up to take your skills test.

DLA's course covers the online theory required by federal law. You'll learn vehicle operation, safety procedures, and regulations. However, CDL-B ELDT is theory only — you still need behind-the-wheel (BTW) training at a local FMCSA-registered provider in Connecticut. BTW is a separate step after ELDT and is required before you test for the Class B skills certificate.

CDL-B Theory ELDT is $20. When you contact the CT DMV to schedule your Class B CDL skills test, provide your ELDT completion date and DLA Academy course ID. The DMV will verify your training through the federal Registry. Bring a valid photo ID, proof of residency, and any medical certificate required to the test.
