Quick answer: ELDT in Alabama costs $20 per course at DLA Academy — FMCSA-approved, online, completed in under 2 hours, and auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) verifies completion through the federal TPR before testing. Required only for first-time CDL applicants and endorsement-adds after February 7, 2022.
Getting your CDL in Alabama means working through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). The federal FMCSA ELDT mandate, in effect since February 7, 2022, requires anyone pursuing a new CDL or endorsement to complete an approved Entry-Level Driver Training course before testing. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. We offer five individual ELDT courses — Hazmat, CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory, School Bus, and Passenger — plus three bundle options, all at the lowest price in the market.
Alabama — State-Specific Note

Alabama CDLs are issued by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). ALEA is a law-enforcement agency, not a DMV — driver licensing was transferred from the Alabama Department of Public Safety to ALEA when the state consolidated public-safety functions. Source: www.alea.gov

Alabama CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Alabama you'll work through Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Alabama uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What ELDT courses does DLA Academy offer in Alabama?+
We offer five FMCSA-approved ELDT courses: Hazmat ELDT (required for the H endorsement), CDL-A Theory ELDT (online theory before your Class A skills test), CDL-B Theory ELDT (online theory before your Class B skills test), School Bus ELDT (required for the S endorsement), and Passenger ELDT (required for the P endorsement). Each course is $20. We also sell CDL-A Permit Prep ($15), a 119-question DMV practice test study tool — not FMCSA-approved ELDT, but pairs with CDL-A Theory ELDT for the full Class A journey.
How long does an ELDT course take to complete?+
Each individual ELDT course completes in under 2 hours. You can finish any of our five courses in one sitting. Upon completion, your course record is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours.
What are the bundle options and how much do they cost?+
We offer three bundles, all genuine discounts: (1) Hazmat ELDT + CDL-A Permit Prep Bundle ($30, saves $5 vs. $35 individual); (2) CDL Complete Bundle ($45 — includes CDL-A Theory ELDT, CDL-B Theory ELDT, and CDL-A Permit Prep, saves $10 vs. $55 individual); (3) 3-Endorsement Bundle ($50 — includes Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus ELDT, saves $10 vs. $60 individual). Individual ELDT courses are $20 each; Permit Prep is $15.
Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL issued before February 7, 2022?+
If your CDL was issued before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and do not need retroactive ELDT. However, if you are upgrading your license class (e.g., from CDL-B to CDL-A) or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus), you will still need to complete the corresponding ELDT course before testing with ALEA.
How does DLA Academy's ELDT relate to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency?+
DLA Academy provides the FMCSA-approved ELDT course; ALEA administers your CDL skills test and issues your license. When you complete any of our ELDT courses, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. ALEA verifies your ELDT by querying the registry. You do not submit anything directly to ALEA — the federal TPR handles that. For details on Alabama's CDL testing process, visit the ALEA website.
