South Carolina CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in South Carolina you'll work through South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SC DMV). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, South Carolina uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What ELDT courses does DLA offer in South Carolina?+
DLA Academy offers five FMCSA-approved ELDT courses: Hazmat ELDT ($20, for the H endorsement), Passenger ELDT ($20, for the P endorsement), School Bus ELDT ($20, for the S endorsement), CDL-A Theory ELDT ($20, required before the Class A CDL skills test), and CDL-B Theory ELDT ($20, required before the Class B CDL skills test). We also offer the CDL-A Permit Prep study tool ($15, not ELDT—it's DMV practice questions only). All courses are auto-submitted to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours of completion.
How long does it take to complete an ELDT course?+
Each individual ELDT course (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus, CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory) completes in under 2 hours. You can finish on your own schedule—no live sessions, no waiting.
What are the state-specific requirements for CDL training in South Carolina?+
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SC DMV) requires FMCSA-approved ELDT completion before you can test for your CDL endorsements or Class A/B licenses. For Hazmat endorsements, you'll also need TSA fingerprinting, which is handled through standard IDEMIA enrollment. Your ELDT completion is auto-submitted to SC DMV via the FMCSA TPR, so no manual paperwork is needed.
Does DLA Academy submit my completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry?+
Yes. All FMCSA-approved ELDT courses (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus, CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory) are automatically submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours of your course completion. SC DMV can verify your ELDT status instantly.
Who needs ELDT? Are there exemptions?+
If you obtained your CDL before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and do not need ELDT. However, if you're adding a new endorsement (H, P, S) after that date, or if you're upgrading your license, you must complete the relevant FMCSA-approved ELDT course for that endorsement or upgrade. Drivers licensed before Feb 7, 2022 upgrading to a higher class (e.g., B to A) must complete CDL-A or CDL-B Theory ELDT.
