Getting a commercial driver's license in Oregon means working with the Oregon Department of Transportation — Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (Oregon DMV). Since February 7, 2022, all new CDL drivers must complete FMCSA-approved Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before taking the Oregon DMV skills test. DLA Academy is an FMCSA-approved provider serving Oregon with five ELDT courses — all priced at $20 each, completed in under 2 hours, and auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

Oregon CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Oregon you'll work through Oregon Department of Transportation — Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (Oregon DMV). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Oregon uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What ELDT courses does DLA Academy offer in Oregon?+
DLA Academy offers five FMCSA-approved ELDT courses for Oregon drivers: CDL-A Theory ELDT, CDL-B Theory ELDT, Hazmat ELDT, Passenger ELDT, and School Bus ELDT. Each course is $20 and covers the federal knowledge requirements. Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus are endorsement-specific courses. CDL-A and CDL-B Theory courses cover the theory required before you take the Oregon DMV skills test — behind-the-wheel (BTW) training is completed separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider.
Do I need ELDT to get a CDL in Oregon?+
Yes, if you're obtaining a CDL for the first time on or after February 7, 2022. You must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT before the Oregon DMV will allow you to take the Class A or Class B CDL skills test. If you held a valid CDL before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT — but you DO still need ELDT if you're upgrading your license class or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus). DLA Academy's courses meet the federal mandate and are recognized by Oregon DMV.
How long does it take to complete an ELDT course?+
Each individual ELDT course at DLA Academy completes in under 2 hours. The courses are online, self-paced, and you can start and finish on your schedule. Once you finish, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours — the Oregon DMV verifies your ELDT status through that registry when you apply for the CDL skills test.
What's the cost, and are there discounts for multiple courses?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each. If you're getting the CDL-A with multiple endorsements, we offer bundle discounts: the CDL Complete Bundle ($45) includes CDL-A Theory ELDT, CDL-B Theory ELDT, and CDL-A Permit Prep — saves $10 vs. buying individually ($55). The 3-Endorsement Bundle ($50) includes Hazmat, Passenger, and School Bus ELDT — saves $10 vs. $60 individual. For Hazmat applicants, the Hazmat + DMV Test Prep Bundle is $30 — saves $5 vs. $35. DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option.
Do I need anything else besides ELDT to get a CDL in Oregon?+
Yes. ELDT is only the theory step. You also need: (1) behind-the-wheel (BTW) training at a local FMCSA-registered provider — DLA Academy does not provide BTW; (2) a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) from the Oregon DMV, which requires passing the DMV's knowledge test (general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles for Class A); (3) the Class A or B CDL skills test at Oregon DMV. For Hazmat, you'll also need TSA clearance through standard IDEMIA enrollment. We offer CDL-A Permit Prep ($15) — 119 practice questions to study for the Oregon DMV knowledge test — but this is a study tool, not ELDT. Many drivers pair Permit Prep with our CDL-A Theory ELDT course.
