Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between ELDT and the permit test?+
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is federally mandated online training that covers safety and operational knowledge. It's auto-submitted to FMCSA and required before you take the skills test with the NJ MVC. The permit test (or CLP knowledge test) is a separate exam you take at an NJ MVC office to get your Commercial Learner's Permit — it covers General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles topics. DLA's CDL-A Permit Practice Test ($15) helps you study for the permit exam but doesn't replace ELDT. You need both.
Do I need behind-the-wheel training, and does DLA provide it?+
Yes. CDL-A and CDL-B applicants must complete behind-the-wheel (BTW) training at a local FMCSA-registered provider. DLA Academy provides the online theory courses only. BTW must be scheduled separately with an approved trainer in New Jersey. ELDT and BTW are two separate requirements.
I already have a CDL issued before February 7, 2022. Do I need ELDT?+
If your CDL was issued before February 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need ELDT for your current license. However, if you upgrade your license class (e.g., CDL-B to CDL-A) or add a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you must complete the corresponding ELDT course. The grandfathering exemption does not apply to upgrades or new endorsements.
How long does each ELDT course take?+
Each DLA Academy ELDT course completes in under 2 hours. You can work through the material at your own pace, and once you finish, your completion is auto-submitted to FMCSA within 24 hours.
What does DLA Academy cost, and how do I know you're the lowest price?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each. CDL-A Permit Practice Test is $15. Bundles range $30–$50 and offer genuine discounts: CDL Complete Bundle ($45, normally $55) saves $10; the 3-Endorsement Bundle ($50, normally $60) saves $10; Hazmat + Permit Prep ($30, normally $35) saves $5. Other FMCSA-approved providers typically charge $23–$75 per course. DLA is the lowest-priced option on the Training Provider Registry.
