Louisiana CDL Requirements — Quick Reference

To get any Commercial Driver's License in Louisiana you'll work through Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (LA OMV). Federal ELDT requirements apply across all 49 states — DLA Academy's online theory courses satisfy the ELDT mandate, and behind-the-wheel training (where required for CDL A or CDL B) must be completed locally at an FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

For Hazmat endorsements, Louisiana uses the standard IDEMIA TSA enrollment process — schedule your fingerprinting through Universal Enroll.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ELDT and why do I need it in Louisiana?+
ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) is a federal mandate from the FMCSA that took effect February 7, 2022. If you're getting your first CDL or adding a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus), you must complete an FMCSA-approved ELDT course. Drivers who held a CDL before Feb 7, 2022 are grandfathered for their existing license class, but any new endorsement or class upgrade still requires ELDT. Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (LA OMV) accepts DLA Academy's ELDT courses and will verify your completion through the federal Training Provider Registry.
How long does an ELDT course take to complete?+
Each individual ELDT course (Hazmat, CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory, School Bus, or Passenger) completes in under 2 hours. You can work at your own pace — start and stop as needed. Once you finish, your completion is auto-submitted to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours, and LA OMV can verify it immediately.
What's the cost, and are there discounts?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each; CDL-A Permit Prep (DMV study tool) is $15. We also offer three money-saving bundles: Hazmat + DMV Test Prep ($30, saves $5), 3-Endorsement ($50, saves $10), and CDL Complete ($45, saves $10). DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option available.
Do I need behind-the-wheel (BTW) training, and does DLA provide it?+
Yes. CDL-A and CDL-B applicants must complete theory (ELDT) and behind-the-wheel training. DLA Academy covers the theory only. You'll arrange BTW separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider in Louisiana. Once you complete both ELDT and BTW, you're ready to schedule your skills test with LA OMV.
What if I'm getting a Hazmat endorsement? Do I need TSA fingerprinting?+
Yes. Hazmat requires TSA security clearance. After completing Hazmat ELDT with DLA Academy, you'll enroll in TSA fingerprinting through IDEMIA Universal Enroll (online or at an enrollment center). IDEMIA will transmit your biometrics to TSA. Once TSA approves you, you can take the Hazmat endorsement test at LA OMV. The TSA enrollment fee is separate from DLA's course fee.
