Getting a Class A CDL in Georgia means working with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (GA DDS). The federal FMCSA mandates ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) before you can take the Class A skills test — and that's what DLA Academy's CDL-A Theory ELDT covers. You'll complete the online theory in under 2 hours, and we auto-submit your certificate to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. Georgia DDS will verify your completion when you apply for your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). Behind-the-wheel training must be completed separately at a local FMCSA-registered BTW provider.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CDL-A Theory ELDT cover?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT is the online theory portion of federal ELDT training. It covers the knowledge and operational tasks required for Class A commercial driving. It is NOT the DMV knowledge test (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles). That's a separate step — you take the DMV test at GA DDS after you have your CLP. Many drivers pair CDL-A Theory ELDT with our CDL-A Permit Prep ($15), which includes 119 practice questions to study for the DMV knowledge test.
How much does Georgia CDL-A Theory ELDT cost?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT is $20. Other providers typically charge $23–$75 for the same federally-mandated course. DLA Academy is the lowest-priced FMCSA-approved option. If you also want CDL-B Theory ELDT and DMV permit practice questions, the CDL Complete Bundle is $45 (saves $10 vs. buying all three separately). Individual Permit Prep is available for $15 if you just need the practice questions.
How long does it take to complete?+
CDL-A Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You can start and finish in one session, or pause and return anytime within your 180-day access window.
Is the course FMCSA-approved and auto-submitted to GA DDS?+
Yes. DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry. Your completion certificate is auto-submitted to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours of finishing the course. Georgia Department of Driver Services (GA DDS) verifies your ELDT completion by checking the TPR — you do not submit it directly to GA DDS yourself.
Who needs CDL-A Theory ELDT in Georgia?+
Anyone applying for a new Class A CDL or upgrading to Class A after February 7, 2022 must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT. If you were issued a CDL before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and don't need ELDT for that license — but if you want to add a new endorsement (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus) or upgrade to a higher class, ELDT is still required. Check with GA DDS if you're unsure of your status.
