To get any Commercial Driver's License in Colorado you'll work through Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (CO DMV). What ELDT courses do I need for my Colorado CDL?+
Depends on what you're getting. Starting a CDL? You need either CDL-A Theory ELDT or CDL-B Theory ELDT ($20 each). Adding an endorsement? Hazmat ELDT ($20), Passenger ELDT ($20), or School Bus ELDT ($20). Each course completes in under 2 hours and auto-submits to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. After ELDT, you'll still need behind-the-wheel training at a local FMCSA-registered provider — DLA covers the online theory only.
How much does DLA Academy ELDT cost in Colorado?+
Individual ELDT courses are $20 each. CDL-A Permit Prep (DMV practice questions, not ELDT) is $15. Who needs ELDT for a Colorado CDL?+
Anyone who got their first CDL on or after February 7, 2022, needs FMCSA-approved ELDT. If you had a valid CDL before Feb 7, 2022, you're grandfathered and don't need retroactive ELDT. BUT if you're upgrading from CDL-B to CDL-A, adding a new endorsement (H, P, or S), or renewing your license, you still need ELDT for the new class or endorsement. Check with the CO DMV if you're unsure whether you're grandfathered.
How long does it take to complete ELDT?+
Each individual ELDT course (Hazmat, Passenger, School Bus, CDL-A Theory, CDL-B Theory) completes in under 2 hours. You can start and finish on your own schedule — no live instructor, no waiting. After you finish, DLA Academy automatically submits your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The CO DMV verifies completion through the Registry, so you're in the system right away.
What happens after I complete ELDT in Colorado?+
DLA Academy auto-submits your completion to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours. The CO DMV queries the Registry to verify your ELDT status, so you're good to schedule your CDL skills test. You'll still need to complete behind-the-wheel training at a local FMCSA-registered provider before you can test. For Hazmat endorsement, you'll also need TSA security clearance — enroll through IDEMIA Universal Enroll, pass the background check, and get fingerprinted. Then take your knowledge test and skills test at the CO DMV.
