Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CDL-B Theory ELDT cover?+
CDL-B Theory ELDT covers the foundational knowledge for Class B commercial vehicles — vehicle inspection, safe operation, load security, hazard perception, and on-road decision-making. It is theory only; you still need to complete behind-the-wheel training (BTW) separately at a local FMCSA-registered provider before taking your skills test with AR DFA.
How long does the course take to complete?+
CDL-B Theory ELDT completes in under 2 hours. You can finish at your own pace — log in, work through the material, and be done in one session.
How much does CDL-B Theory ELDT cost?+
CDL-B Theory ELDT is $20. If you're also working toward a Class A CDL, the CDL Complete Bundle — which includes CDL-A Theory ELDT, CDL-B Theory ELDT, and CDL-A Permit Prep (119 DMV practice questions) — costs $45 and saves you $10 compared to buying all three separately ($55 individual).
Is DLA Academy FMCSA-approved, and how does completion get to AR DFA?+
Yes, DLA Academy is FMCSA-approved and listed on the Training Provider Registry (TPR). When you complete CDL-B Theory ELDT, your completion is automatically submitted to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours. AR DFA verifies your ELDT status by checking the TPR — you do not need to submit anything yourself.
Who needs ELDT, and are there any exemptions?+
Anyone obtaining a new CDL-B license on or after February 7, 2022, must complete FMCSA-approved ELDT. If you held a valid CDL-B before February 7, 2022, you are grandfathered and do not need retroactive ELDT. However, if you're upgrading from Class C to Class B, or adding a new endorsement (like Hazmat or Passenger), you will need ELDT for that upgrade or endorsement — grandfathering does not apply to new credentials.
