How to Get a Hazmat Endorsement on Your Illinois CDL

Illinois follows the standard federal process for adding a Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement to your CDL:

  1. Complete Hazmat ELDT Online — $20 DLA Academy's FMCSA-approved course. Your completion is automatically reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry so the Illinois Secretary of State can verify before your test.
  2. Apply for TSA Security Threat Assessment — Do This First Apply for your TSA Security Threat Assessment online or at a TSA enrollment center. Illinois requires TSA clearance on file BEFORE you can take the HazMat written test — do not skip this step.
  3. Wait for Illinois Secretary of State Notification Once TSA clearance is received, the Illinois Secretary of State will notify you. Then visit an Illinois Secretary of State CDL facility to take the HazMat knowledge test.
  4. Pass the HazMat Knowledge Test 30 questions, 80% passing score required. Administered at an Illinois Secretary of State CDL facility after TSA clearance is confirmed.
  5. Receive Your H Endorsement Once TSA clearance is confirmed and you pass the knowledge test, the Illinois Secretary of State issues your updated CDL with the H endorsement.
⚠️ Illinois Note: Illinois requires TSA security threat assessment clearance on file BEFORE you can take the HazMat written test. The Illinois Secretary of State will notify you once TSA approval is received. Do not schedule your test until you receive this notification.
💡 Pro Tip: Complete ELDT and start your TSA application immediately — doing both at the same time is the fastest path to your Illinois HazMat endorsement. TSA recommends starting at least 60 days before you need the endorsement.

Most drivers complete it in under 2 hours. There's no time limit — you can pause and resume at any time on any device.
